Verfügbar ist die XE im Oracle-Technet unter http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/express-edition/11gxe-beta-download-302519.html für Windows (32-bit) und Linux (64-bit). Zertifiziert ist die XE nur für die Linux-Distributionen RedHat (4.7 und 5.2), Oracle Enterprise Linux (4.7 und 5.2) oder SLES (10 SP2 oder 11), aber mit den Tipps von https://confluence.bytesource.net/display/bytesourcepub/2011/04/02/Howto+install+Oracle+11XE+Beta+on+Ubuntu+10.04+x64 man kann sie auch einfach unter einem 64-Bit Ubuntu zum Laufen bekommen.Wir starten das Experiment mit einer virtuellen Maschine mit 1,5 GB Hauptspeicher und 12 GB Plattenplatz und installieren darauf ein Ubuntu 10.10 in der 64-bit-Version.Zusätzlich zur Standard-Ubuntu-Installation installieren wir noch ein paar weitere Pakete:
sudo apt-get install aliensudo apt-get install libaio1sudo apt-get install sysv-rc-conf
Wie üblich erfordert der Download der XE-Software vom Oracle Technet die kostenfreie Registrierung.Das ZIP-File linux.x64_11gR2_OracleXE.zip wird nach dem Download einfach ausgepackt (unzip linux.x64_11gR2_OracleXE.zip) und dann mittels „alien“ in ein deb-Paket umgewandelt:
sudo alien -d --scripts oracle-xe-11.2.0-0.5.x86_64.rpm
Dann kann man die Software installieren
Da es „/sbin/chkconfig“ unter Ubuntu nicht gibt, kommt es bei der Installation zu einer Fehlermeldung, die man aber getrost ignorieren kann.Nach der Installation erfolgt die Konfiguration mittels
sudo /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure
Das Skript fragt nach Ports für Apex und den Oracle Net Listener sowie dem Password für SYS und SYSTEM und konfiguriert dann die Datenbank.Anschließend noch mittels „sudo sysv-rc-conf“ den Service oracle-xe für die runlevel 2 - 5 aktivieren, damit Datenbank und Listener beim Systemstart automatisch gestartet werden und fertig ist die Installation.

Aber bitte immer daran denken: es ist momentan noch eine Beta-Version. Probleme können im 11g Express-Edition (Beta)-Forum gemeldet werden.
Auch wenn die Software nicht für Ubuntu zertifiziert ist läuft sie auf Ubuntu und hinterläßt sie einen guten ersten Eindruck. Mal sehen, wann die Express Edition "Production" wird.
Hat gut funktioniert.

Leider funktioniert die Anleitung bei mir nicht. Ich habe es mit Ubuntu Server 10.04 x64 und Ubuntu 11.10 x64 Server probiert.
Der Aufruf von

Hab eine Zeit lang gegoogelt, ist aber nichts rausgekommen dabei.

Ich kann das Problem leider nicht nachvollziehen, ich habe es heute nochmal mit der Produktionsversion der Express Edition (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/express-edition/downloads/index.html) probiert und da klappte die Umwandlung mittels "alien" problemlos. Möglicherweise ist beim Download oder bei einem Filetransfer etwas schiefgelaufen.

tried this on two ubuntu 11.10 machines with oracle-xe_11.2.0-2_amd64 - but the configuration of the database fails

During configure, it showed me some errors:
- not finding /bin/awk, may be a symlink from /usr/bin/awk should be created?
- Listener...touch: cannot touch `/var/lock/subsys/listener - maybe the directory should be created?

I've never had problems with awk, so maybe you installed Ubuntu a little bit different. The problems with the listener can be ignored.

On my ubuntu 11.10 awk is /usr/bin/awk.
So, either editing the script and setting the correct path to awk or setting the AWK variable should help. The latter can be done in the call to the script:
sudo AWK=/usr/bin/awk /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure
